Hang Jebat Mausoleum

The resting place of once 'justice' upholder during Melaka Sultanate

The story of this Mausoleum

Why I write about Hang Jebat Mausoleum? Most of the residents in Melaka and Malaysia have heard the stories of the famous "five Hangs" or five friends.Hang Tuah is known as the famous leader who has the utmost loyalty while Hang Jebat, is known as the "justice" upholder.

His final resting place; known as Hang Jebat Mausoleum is located at the heart of Melaka, Malaysia. The exact location of the mousoleum is at Jalan Kampung Kuli.

Although Hang Jebat is a justice upholder; he was once labeled as the "Traitor of the Sultan" during the 15th century.

The Five Hangs were famous for their unconditional brotherhood and courage while serving the Melaka Sultanate during the reign of Sultan Mansur Syah.

However, due to an unexpected entangled political situation, both of them (Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat) were forced to killed each other in a duel. One in the name of justice (Hang Jebat) while the other in the name of loyalty (Hang Tuah).

The duel arose when Hang Tuah was sentence to death by Sultan Mansur Syah for an alleged Court impropriety. Sadly, Hang Tuah was framed by other Melaka Court Members.

Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat were the closest among the five friends. They were sworn-brothers. Therefore, he was aggrieved when he believe (like everyone else) that his sworn-brother (Hang Tuah) was executed. He then challenged to fight anyone after he took over the Melaka Palace. Sadly, not to his knowing his sworn-brother (Hang Tuah) had been saved from death by the Sultan Bendahara and was hidden in a secret hide-out.

When no one could fight him (Hang Jebat), Hang Tuah was brought out from his hideout after receiving Sultan Mansur Syah’s pardon. Later Hang Tuah received a sanction for the ultimate duel between these two famous warriors. None of them could withdraw from the duel due to honor.

Therefore, sadly, they have to fight to the death. The duel lasted for days before Hang Jebat was stabbed in the stomach by Hang Tuah who was using Keris Taming Sari. It was believed that after he was wounded, he ran amok and killed more than forty people before he passed away on his best friends lap (Hang Tuah).

If you visit the Melaka Sultanate Palace, there’s a section which has a representation of the famous duel of these two famous warriors.

Someone whispered to me that sometimes the famous duel still continue in the Melaka Sultanate Palace after the sun sets…
