Ikan Keli Lemak Chili Padi is one of the Nyonya cooking that is heavily influenced by Malay cooking style.

Ikan Keli or catfish is one type of freshwater fish which is normally found in paddy fields or in the nearby streams/river. Recently this delicious rare treat has made a comeback; thanks to the commercial raring of Ikan keli and Ikan Haruan.

First, you need to clean the slimy body of Ikan Keli. If you don't know how to do it, major shopping complexes do provide the service of cleaning this fish.

Below are the ingredients for preparing the Ikan Keli Masak Chili Padi:

4-5 Ikan Keli
20 chili Padi (finely grind)
2 table spoon of finely grounded turmeric.

3 lemongrass stem; locally known as serai. (knock the stem with a heavy object)
1 red chili (sliced)
1 green chili (sliced)
1 tomato (sliced)

400ml coconut milk (santan)
300ml water
Salt and sugar

Optional: Fresh starfruits cut into small portions
Note: These starfruits are smaller sized. Used solely for cooking.

Cooking Methods:

  1. Slightly fry the Ikan keli for better texture and taste. Marinate with salt and tumeric powder. (very little)
  2. Mix the finely grounded ingredients, serai and water in the cooking pot. Then, cooked it until boiling using medium fire. The ingredients must be properly cooked to prevent the raw taste.
  3. Add in coconut milk (santan), salt and a pinch of sugar for taste. Mix and stir slowly. Add in the starfruits if you desire. Lastly, add in sliced Chili and tomato.
  4. Ready to serve.
