Can’t find Jonker Walk or Jonker Street on Melaka map? This is because the official name of the street is Jalan Hang Jebat.
Jonker Walk, the Melaka’s night market has become a favourite tourist hangout spot since its launching. Generally, the tourists prefer to sit at the bar while drinking a glass of beer and at the same time enjoying the meal and absorbing the busy scene of Melaka night market with its hustling and bustling of people.
The beautifully decorated street during Chinese New Year.
As for the Malaccan, a walk along this street with family members during weekend has somehow become a Melaka Family Fun destination. Here, we could “hunt” for yummy food, snacks, drinks and different kinds of stuff under the “moon”.
The street is closed for vehicles as early as 5.30p.m as it will be transformed into the famously known night market. You could see mini tables oozing out from bars and cafes located along the Jalan Hang Jebat and a few adjoining streets. Hawkers and traders put up their makeshift stalls along the road and viola; the crowds will emerge.
If you are driving down to Melaka, check out where to park your car as the surrounding area is packed. There’s a few private parking areas namely at Jalan Kota Laksamana and Jalan Portugis (beside Pay Teck Chinese School).
The night market officially starts from 6.00p.m till midnight. However, recently you will be able to some makeshift stalls during the daytime (weekend). This is probably due to the increasing number of tourists thronging the Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Street).
The best time will be two weeks prior and after Chinese New Year. The streets will be decorated will lanterns and lion dance troupes will be performing along the street.
Wooden Clog by Gee’s, popiah, antique perihelia by traders along the narrow alley, snacks, dim sum and ladies accessory (hair clips, necklace, fake jewelry etc).
Aside from that you might enjoy a peek into the clans associations where aunties and uncles practise line dancing or karaoke session.
My advice, just enjoy the crowd and fun environment! If you can’t make it to the Jonker Walk nightmarket, the Jonker Street (daytime) is as fun as providing “hunt” under the sun!
