Two years back, my brother, Darren broke the good news to my parents! He (after proposing to his girlfriend) decided to get married…
Let me share with you the marriage registration ceremony of my brother, Mr. Daren Lim and Ms. Fanny Woon in Melaka (Malacca).
Just like other couple in Malaysia, my brother and his girlfriend (since university) would be legally be married one or two years prior from the actual Chinese wedding day, in layman words, they will go and “register”. This is the first step in a typical Chinese wedding in Malaysia.
Since they are working and living in Johor Bahru, I am automatically entrust with some “homework”.
After much consideration, my brother and his wife to be decided to have the ceremony in Heng Ann Association in Bukit Cina, Melaka.
Officially "Man and Wife"
A typical Chinese marriage registration ceremony is normally a small and private affairs only the parents and immediate family members and close friends would come and attend the ceremony.
Before the registration ceremony started, we head upstairs and offer some incense to the deities who governs the temple wishing for a blissful union for the couple and a few (many) snaps of photographs were taken.
Then, when the time arrives, the marriage registrar asks the couples and family members to go into a small conference room to solemnize the wedding.
A bouquet of flowers, wedding ring. Wedding vows.
Violla! Everything is done; my brother and his girlfriend are pronounced as man and wife in the eyes of the Malaysian law.
However, for us they are not considered as “married” yet until the actual day of the Chinese wedding ceremony!
After the marriage registration ceremony, we head to the Pei Zhan restaurant for lunch to celebrate the joyful union.
And that’s pretty much how the Chinese marriage registration ceremony in Malaysia is done.
Simple, isn't it?
However, some might choose to throw a barbeque dinner at night. It’s all up to the couple how they want to celebrate this special occasion.
