Antiques and old collected items
Top the list for Melaka Shopping Fun will be Jonker Street. It is the place that you should head to for antiques and old collected items. Take your time to shop and bargain for antiques, old items or ‘treasure junk‘ in the shops located along the road. You must really be on your sharp eyes and “nose“ among the disarray piles of stuff to spot your prized possession! You might even want to head to Heeren Street, Jalan Hang Jebat and Lorong Hang Jebat for more antiques treasure hunt. Happy Hunting….
Nyonya Kebaya & Kasut Manek-manek (beaded shoes)
This is the traditional and customary attire among the Nyonyas. Traditionally the baju kebaya will be worn together with a matching sarong and kasut manek-manek to complete the attire. Nowadays, you can wear Baju Kebaya with long pants or jeans and fitting mini skirt to give this traditional attire a sexy modern touch. It’s best to have a custom made Kebaya as it offers comfort and enhance the beauty of the wearer.
Among the food lovers, a quick shop for Nyonya Kueh (cakes and desserts) is a must when visiting Melaka. Just drop by at selected coffee shops and Pasar Malam (night markets). Some will even give these Nyonya Kueh makers a call to place an order!
Shopping Complexes
Looking for the comfort of shopping in an air-conditioned place? Just head to any one of the shopping complexes in Melaka. Mahkota Parade and Dataran Pahlawan are located at Melaka Raya. If you want to do some last minute shopping, just head towards Jaya Jusco or Melaka Mall at Ayer Keroh. For those that would like to purchase attire for work, maybe you should visit Madam King; located at Jalan Bunga Raya. It is one of the famous old timer shopping complexes during the heyday. Just head to the ladies department and you could find a nice quality and affordable two piece office suit.
Jonker Street
Jonker Street is also known as Jonker Walk among Malaccans. It is a pedestrian walkway that becomes a lively marketplace every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. It is located in Melaka town. You could find foods, souvenirs, accessory and more under the moon in this uniquely Melaka Chinatown. This area is also a must visit for antiques and arts lovers during daytime. Have patience and explore the shops for the memorabilia of the past. One last thing, don’t forget to BARGAIN!
Arts & Crafts
Interested to shop for arts and crafts? Just head to Melaka as lately Arts Galleries have been mushrooming in Melaka. Here, you could find a reputable artist named Jehan Chan. Art work ranges from wood sculpture, batik painting, oil painting, paper cutting, traditional Chinese Painting to modern contemporary art. The shopping areas for Arts and Craft will be along Temple Street, Jonker Street, Jalan Tukang Besi and Heeren Street.
Night Market
Known as “Pasar Malam“ for the local, night market is the place where you could find anything under the sun. Oops! I would rather say under the “moon“. Be it foods, drinks, apparels, DIY goods, household goods, fresh foods and vegetables. You name it; you will get it!
