Multicolours and Multilayers Peranakan Wedding Gown

A quick sneek preview

Everyone loves beautiful wedding gowns. As a Peranakan, I would like to share with you the Peranakan wedding gown and accessories. The distinctive features of Peranakan matrimonial gown and accessory are the mixture of Malay and Chinese influence.

I have figured out the best way to show you this beautiful and rare collection of Peranakan or Baba matrimonial gown that is by explaining it with photographs.

Let’s start with the bridegroom.

City Turtle Melaka: Peranakan Groom Headgear

The cap worn by the bridegroom has a strong resemblance to the cap worn by the male Chinese in China. The attire of the bridegroom also has a strong resemblance to the attire worn by the Chinese Officials in China.

It was normally embroidered with motives and symbols that represent good luck, happiness and prosperity. (Dragon, Double Happiness, Phoenix Bird, Peonies Flowers and so on).

Accessory of the Bridegroom

Hand Fan: This hand fan is the only accessory of the bridegroom. He needs to fan it and act as a lord.

Shoes: Embroidered thick-soled shoes for the groom.

The Peranakan Bride Matrimonial Gown and Accessories:

City Turtle Melaka: Peranakan Bride & Groom The Matrimonial Gown of Peranakan is known as Kuah. It is a multi-layered gown embroidered with multi-coloured auspicious motives and symbols.

The gown has wide long selves with strong resemblance to the attire worn by the princesses in China.

Accessory of the Bride:

The elaborated crown hairdo of the bride is truly magnificent. The top rounded crown studded with hairpins show the influence of Malay Culture. While, the Chinese influence could be seen on the forehead cloth sewn and embroidered with the Chinese deities known as “The Eight Immortals“.

(Note: The Penang Peranakan Bride Wedding headgear is different from Peranakan Melaka & Singapore’s)

The Peranakan Bride’s hair is swept back and divided into parts. The top part of her hair will be styled into a bun to hold the rounded crown studded with hairpins. The lower half of her hair will be styled known as “Buntut Belangkas“.

City Turtle Melaka: Peranakan Wedding Slipper

Embroidered beaded satin shoes for the bride or embroider slippers made from gold treat.

The Wedding Dinner Attire is much simpler as compared to the matrimonial gown. An embroidered handkerchief with a ring completes the dinner attire.
